1997 pontiac grand am ? Cadillac converter?

if i take out the Cadillac converter and block it off or cut it off will the can still run right ...b/c all it does is filter the air that goes in to the air ....so a can really does not need it right ? i live in florida so we dont have inspections but if i was to move back up north i cant get it on the road ....and the part cost $100 so i really dont want to spend it if the car can run with out it ..........and the check engine light should go of ? i took it to advanced auto and the hooked it up to the doc ...and its got 2 problems and runs like a beauty ....
 
CATALYTIC Converter, anyways it will make your car annoyingly loud if I'm not mistaken.
 
First person was right its called a catalytic converter. If remove it and move back up north you won't pass inspection.
