1997 Mazda 626 V6 ES high revs Help?

I found a new car, 1997 Mazda 626 ES V6 automatic transmission, that even when in overdrive hits about 4x1000 rpm's going about 70-75mph. Now the man selling the car had to replace some of the major engine components like the head gasket and most of the wires. He also mentioned that the computer was re-set. When in drive the engine hits high revs, abnormal for a normal V6 engine that I have witnessed, but normal for more like a four cylinder. One person told me not to worry, but I am slightly concerned that a V6 engine is not supposed to be pulling that high RPM in overdrive if indeed all 6 cylinders are in gear. Am I wrong? Can anyone shed light on this car?

PS- It is automatic, it is a V6 and it is driving and shifting fine, just high rpms.

The transmission is fixing to go out. At 70mph the engine should not be turning over 3200 rpm. Most likely a bad torque converter, but could be burned clutches. Pull the transmission dip stick and smell the fluid if it smells burned or is dark brownish color it means bad news. Also have a good mechanic check out the car, it's worth the expense rather than getting stuck with a junker. Just from what you have said, I would pass on this deal.
