1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a problem holding battery charge.?

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a problem holding battery charge. I originally thought it was the alternator but now I believe it to be the voltage regulator. The Jeep was starting, then losing charge while driving. Sometimes it would start up again and the gauge would show it charged, then would lose charge again. Now it won't start at all without a jump or new battery. Any advice would be appreciated.
