1997 Ford Probe GTS. Should I look for a replacement transmission or get it

rebuilt? What would this cost? About 6 months ago I bought a '97 Ford Probe GTS. I purchased it running, but with a bad transmission. It has 84k miles, so I dunno if it's been mistreated or it's simply run it's course. When I begin accelerating from a dead stop (or a low speed), I have to do so extremely slowly, just lightly touching the pedal. If I try accelerate the way you would in any normally operational car, the engine revs up very high and the car starts shaking until I let off the gas. I'm guessing this is what people mean when they say their transmission is slipping? I've been bypassing this for the past several months by starting in 2nd, and shifting into drive when I get going. I have no problems at higher speeds 50-80, but when driving around town 20-30~ mph sometimes the car starts vibrating a little, so I hit the gas to go 5-10 mph faster and it stops. This mostly happens when going uphill, but not necessarily anything steep.

Because of this, I assumed I had a bad transmission, but it was also confirmed by a local Ford dealership's technician when he pulled my car into the garage for an oil change. He also said the transmission fluid was a bad color, but changing it wouldn't help any. Would it be cheaper/better to get another transmission installed or have this one worked on/rebuilt? What should either cost, and, if needed, where could I find a replacement transmission?

Thanks.
Forgot to mention, it's automatic.
