1997 Ford Contour will not engage into reverse?

No previous tranny problems, not low or high on tranny fluid either.

Driving the car the other day ~40mph, it then shifted into a lower gear I pulled over and parked the car. Now it will not go into reverse; the car acts identical to being in neutral when it is "in" the reverse position.

Fully automatic car, 100k miles. Never been abused.

Note: When it is in neutral it will not freely roll backwards; but the car will roll and drive forwards just fine!

Is this more likely to be a clutch or transmission problem.

Check the linkage from the shifter to the transmission to see if it is damaged. it could be bent. worse case scenario is that reverse is gone. this has to be repaired by a transmission shop.
