1997 Dodge Caravan whining noise?

It is a 6 cyl engine. My husband had a Mercedes Diesel with Turbo, and this van has the whining sound like the turbo in the Mercedes. I think it is basically at the higher speeds, any ideas what it would be?
Oh crap, the tranny does mess up on occasion when I first start it. Put it in gear and it's still in park, or put it in reverse and it's in nuetral. thanks for the advice!
 
More than likely it is your power steering pump.

But it could also be the transmission as the other answer said.

I would guess since it only makes the sound while moving that it is the transmission, but there are other possibilities as well:

wheel bearing
loose/worn belt
bad pully
