this is one of those things that you need the right equipment in a shop to check, although the information we could possibly use to give you an idea like what is the MILEAGE seems to be missing, if the car has over a hundred thousand miles, more than likely the transmission has enough wear that it can no longer keep enough pressure to hold fifth gear, this is likely not a simple fix, but a good transmission shop is who to ask. I am not familiar with the chrysler 5 speed automatic. Unfortunately in the 80s and the 90s car makers often took low bid on millions of transmissions with substandard aluminum parts. The transmission would often times work for a while, but any time after 100,000 it could take a poop. The good news is by now the rebuild kit comes with all the newer stronger much better transmission parts, and a good shop can build a nice strong durable transmission. a five speed automatic, is not cheap however. it may hold in fourth for a while, you might try changing the fluid if it has not been done recently, but UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES take a transmission flush, this will finnish what is left, clean fluid can sometimes help, and the only product I know of that may help some is prolong, but there is no guarantee of anything with a high mileage transmission. Good luck

Hi , this car has a transmission problem , it wont shift into the fifth gear on the highway what could be wrong with it ? how could this prob be fixed? ,i would really like to give this a try and hopefully fix this trans, although i am not an expert , I've gained a few skills at fixing one or two things but never a trans.

Thank you for your time
the car has 70,000 miles
