1995 Toyota Tercel... repair suggestions required...?

Hello!

I have a 1995 4-door Toyota Tercel. I would greatly appreciate it if you could assist me with a couple doubts I have about my car.

First, since i got the car (it is a used car), although I can see the hour and I can search radio stations, there is absolutely no sound coming from my speakers... not even static.

Could it be that I need to replace the fuse for my radio? or could there be a problem with my speakers?

Another problem I am having since the past 2 weeks, is that my car battery is having difficulty starting my car engine. I have no idea if it is really due to the weather (I live in a state where it could get as cold as -20 degrees Celsius), or it has anything to do with the fact that my hood does not completely close (due to an accident), and rain / snow most definitely must have gotten under the hood.

And finally, could you tell me what might be the cause of the engine light being turned on?

If you find that the car's engine is cranking very slowly, but once it starts, it runs and starts fine for the day, the battery has likely lost its capacity to hold a sufficient charge. Batteries generally last about 3 to 8 years.
The problem with your speakers could be the wiring for the speakers themselves. If you're up to it, one way to check it is like this:
If you can gain access to the back of your stereo, unplug your speaker wires, and momentarily connect each pair of speaker wires (each speaker has two wires) to the + and - terminals of any 1.5 volt battery AA or C or whatever, and if you hear crackling from the speaker, then that speaker and the associated wiring is good. If not, then you have speaker/wiring issues. Hope this helps.
 
Sometimes those radios have a built in amp, and just might be a fuse on your hot wire for it. since you have a light and display still on your radio. depends if it's a factory or after market too. might just be loose connection to you speakers.
Also the alternator may not be charging like it should if you have a hard time with the battery starting the car, considering the battery is good.
engine light, bad senser some where. but with the age of the car, and if it's running good i wouldn't worry about it. it's common, and will cost you more than it's worth sometimes.
 
First - you should go to a mechanic and have them diagnose your Check Engine light - they have diagnostic tools that should tell them the problem. You may discover your poor-starts are related to whatever is going on with the engine.

Second - My camry (96) has been in an accident and its hood does not close, and I have had no issues with starting the vehicle. If your diagnose comes up clean - you may want to get new spark plugs and battery ($100 total) and you can probably put them in yourself (or ask your father or if you have friends who know cars to do it for you).

Lasty - I would check to see if the radio is CONNECTED to the speakers. It sounds like your radio is getting power (thus clock and stations show up). There is a wire-harness behind the radio that connects to the speakers. It'll take an hour or two, but pull out your radio and check to be sure the harness is connected and the speaker wires are making contact.
