1995 Suzuki GS500es, runs at LOW idle but dies when in gear or given gas?

The bike was in storage for about two years. Stable in the tank, etc. I have, drained and refilled tank, taken apart and cleaned carbs (mikuni twin), they were very dirty but functional. Replaced the "O" rings. Changed the oil and filter, cleaned the AIR filter. Replaced the spark plugs and fuel lines as they were dry rotted at the ends. The fuel has no problem (as far as I can tell) getting to the carbs. The bowls are full. The bike will sit at idle all day long BUT as soon as I try to: turn the throttle, close the choke or put it in gear and close the clutch it will die. It WILL run with it in gear on the center stand but of coarse kicks and dies after a minute.
Anyway, I have played with the "idle" adjust knob on the bottom of the carbs with very minimal change. The bike wouldn't even start a month ago before cleaning the carbs and such so I am in the right direction. Just don't understand why it keeps dying.

is the neutral safety switch working ok on the kickstand? or does it have one? If not you need to go up one step on the main jet needle, do you remember where that clip was before dis assembly? I've done that on my FZX and took me forever to figure it out lol
