1995 ford explorer on its last leg? or should i say wheel?

i have a 1995 ford explorer and im pretty sure its just going to explode one day. it has 241,856 miles on it most which are highway miles, i just replaced the alternator and my gas guage is no longer working and i have put close ot $1,000 in it in the last year. im not in the financial position to buy another vehicle right now and im wondering what i can do to prolong the life of my explorer longer.
it drives great, transmission is great i just had it checked and i keep up with oil changes and routine maintence im just worried.
 
That's a lot of miles. How does the engine run? Does it burn oil? How does the trans shift? If it runs good and there aren't any trans problems, just keeping up on maintenance is all you can do.
