1995 ford escort ... weak synchronizer in 1st gear...?

Is this really bad? and also how can i fix it?

when shifting into 1st you have to hold it in first otherwise it will pop out and make this terrible grinding/squealing sound..
 
ya this sounds like the syncro in 1st. our truck would have this problem in 3rd and ya we just rebuilt the tranny and the problem was gone. This can be not too bad, but maybe consider getting it fixed when u have the time cus it reduces the wear on the teeth from shifting into it or down shifting. Well if u kno everything about the manual transmission then yes you can do it but it may take you from a good weekend to the entire week. Its just that u have to disassemble the entire tranny to do this. But good luck on this
