I've got a 1994 Mazda B2300 base model pick up truck. Its a 5-speed with no power steering or a/c. It began making a loud screeching noise when started, then it progressed to when you started it till you put it in gear, now it does it until you hit about 35mph....it just gets worse and it has only been a couple of days. The screeching is coming from the serpentine belt. The belt appears to be slightly loose, but I thought that it was automatically adjusted to the correct tension. What all could be wrond...I would go get it looked at, but I work all weekend and was wondering if this is an easy fix I can do myself.

The screech noise is classic "loose belt" noise. Your correct that usually modern cars with a Serpentine belt have an auto tension er.

See the Auto Zone site for more details or get a shop manual.

The belt may have stretched.

The pulleys could be mis-aligned, a bolt might be loose or missing from the alternator.

The #1 suspect in your case (No P/S or A/C) is a faulty tensioner. Since this is a 14 yr old car and replacing it probably isn't very diffulcult, you might want to just go ahead and replace both the belt and tensioner. Pay close attention to what the auto zone site says about working on tensioners; they have a powerful spring. With the belt off; Give the alternator and water pump a few turns by hand and feel for resistance.

bad tensioner, tensioner pulley, idler pulley, accessory pulley/bearings, or bad belt. Or the alignment.
