1994 ford ranger trans messed up?

My dads Ranger transmission blew up while on the highway. So we went and got one from the junkyard. It supposed to have about 60k miles on it. Now when we put it in, the truck ran, and shifted. But when he got back home after a test drive, there was a strong smell. I think it was the clutch. He said that the first gear was inthe second gear and all over the place. When shifting into fifth, he has to throw the shifter well beyond what he used to to put it into gear. Is there any way to fix this? What is wrong with this trans? Thanks for the advise.

that tranny needs to be exchanged, sounds like the previous owner used it as a racing transmision and abused the snot out of it.
