1993 Chevy s10 throwing gunk out of mufller?

I have a 1993 Chevy s10(although i don't think that's relevant to this problem).

A few months ago my truck had all sorts of problems. A friend told it it was probably the Catalytic Converter, so i had that replaced at a shop.
It ended up being the fuel injectors and the fuel pressure regulator which i replaced about a month after the catalytic converter.

Anyway, now although the truck is running well, it smell rich. Like it's not burning the fuel properly. And the muffler seems to be throwing out black gunk. I can really notice it if i floor it while in neutral. And the smell is VERY strong. If i get my face down by the muffler i feel like i can pass out within seconds.

Now I'm being told AGAIN that it's the catalytic converter. Is this possible even though it was replaced about 6 months ago?

Could the new one either have been defective, or been messed up by the continued problems?

Also, i should mention, that the same friend that originally recommended replacing it, popped a few wholes in the original one to see if it was messd up. Turned out it wasn't. :(

Any thoughts? Please help!
