To be honest with you that engine and drive-line aren't really suited to racing. Its as you said, primarily designed for pulling power. There are things that could be done to render it somewhat faster but by the time you got any significant improvement you'd have spent more than what it would cost for another F-150 equipped with a V-8 and you still wouldn't be competitive. There are changes that could be made in the rear axle as well as higher gearing in the transmission but the end result would be the same, its just not going to be a economical project.
Look at it this way... there are changes you could make to a farm tractor but you could never make it competitive because it wasn't designed to be a fast or high performance vehicle. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but its the cold hard truth.
