1992 ford explorer wont go into 2 hi Help?

i have a 1992 ford explorer and the shift motor went bad on the transfer case so i took it off to do it manualy and it wont go into 2 hi only 4x4 low and 4x4 hi.
What can i try to get it into 2 hi?

if i drop the front driveshaft and keep it in 4 hi how will it effect the preformance ?

The 90's model explorers are badly known for their tranny and drive trains.
