1991 Toyota Corolla Station wagon emergency exit?

a buddy of mine drives a 1991 toyota corolla wagon, and we can't seem to figure out what the emergency exit will do. we don't want to pull, and not be able to reset some sort of mechanism, but he'd really like to know what it does. it's just a small lever next to the emergency brake. any idea what it does?
ejection seat... nice. but how exactly does it work, if thats what it really is?
 
It detonates all the explosive bolts in the door locks and hinges and rear hatch and sends them flying off the vehicle so you can exit quickly.
