...sound when put in gear.? My jeep cherokee just died out on me. I was driving down the street to go to work. All of a sudden, this huge noise just rang out. The noise sounded like I either got a flat tire or something just exploded. When I put it into gear it would not even move. All it would do was idle, no movement what so ever. It make's this grinding noise when put into gear, but still does not move.
 
Yeah, I've done that a couple of months back as well. You have probably snapped a drive shaft or busted your clutch.
block the wheels, and put it in gear with the engine idling and then get out and look under your car to see the driveshafts. They should not be moving if the wheels are not going round, so if you can see one turning round it is a sign that it is broken. And if they are not turning then it is probably your clutch that has gone.
