the other day i want and got in my truck and started it i had to run back inside to get something and it died and had a very strange smell like something was melted but have not been able to figure it out. i have not been able to get it started since. I have changed all the spark plugs/wires put a new fuel filter on. the battery is good.what else could cause this?

Spark, fuel or compression. Take your pick. Since you've replaced your plugs and wires trace back to the distributor and make sure that your ignition system is working and firing correctly, that's most likely your issue. Otherwise it could be a fueling issue, i.e: the fuel pump isn't working properly or there's something awry somewhere in the fueling system (lines, injectors, pump). Also just for kicks if all else fails, make sure that the motor's compression isn't crap (compression test) and it can still function alright.
