1991 Ford Escort won't start?

I have a '91 Ford Escort, station wagon (lx, I think) and beginning several days ago it would take slightly longer than normal to turn over and start the car. The time between when I turn the key and when the car actually starts got progressively longer, until today, when the vehicle stopped starting entirely. My guess is that it's the starter, but I don't know much about cars. My questions are: What's wrong with my car? And how much should it cost to fix?

First, it's a 91 Escort so there's part of your problem.

Second - take it to a garage for an estimate. Your battery is probably going but your alternator might also be busted, too. Trouble is with Ford's, not sure about this make/model, but with most the alternator and the starter are one piece, so you can't replace one and not the other - meaning twice the cost.
