1990 yamaha virago 535 clutch/shifting trouble?

I bought it used about a month ago. It has always shifted fine then one day when I start it put it in gear it stalls.(while I'm holding the clutch). Finally I get it running go to the end of the street and it was very hard to down shift and stalled again when I stopped. If anyone has any idea I could use it this is my first bike.

I tried adjusting the clutch cable and I still have the same problem.
 
Start by lubricating the clutch cable, making sure it moves freely and is not frayed. Adjust the free play for about 3mm of slack at the lever. Be sure that the lever is not cracked, does not foul the engine or frame, and fits tightly on its splines.
