1990 Toyota Tercel coupe How many miles do these cars last?

Do you have the mechanical history/maintenance done to the vehicle ?? That would help a lot. The valve noise is indication of needing the valves replaced or reground aka a "valve job". Usually when a car needs that, it's better to just get a rebuilt motor, as other things will go bad besides the valves
 
Well I have a 1990 toyota tercel coupe it has 240,000 miles on it. Just wondering, what is the average legnth these cars last. Also why do these engines make loud valve noises. Thanks!!!!!
