1990 Lincoln Town Car Fuel Gauge Problems?

I recently bought a 1990 Lincoln Town Car, and it runs great, looks great, but my fuel gauge jumps around... it is sometimes consistant and sometimes not. It goes up or down 100- 300 kms sometimes!

Is this normal? Is the computer in my car needing to be replaced?

I am not very mechanically inclined, and have never owned a car quite like this before.
the entire dashboard is digital...
 
The gauge has whats called a float inside the gas tank, if you go up a hill the meter will change if you go down again it will change, if you stop abruptly, it will swing back and forth.
 
sounds ok is it a electronic fuel guage or a needle? if its a needle it will jump.
