1990 Honda Civic Axle swap?

I'm going to buy a 1990 honda civic dx and the guy says that the axle is bad and it needs a new one. It only makes a slight noise while turning sometimes and he said that I must change the transmission when I change the axle. I would like to know what you guys think it is. And how much of a pain in the butt it will be..
