1990 ford aod trans does not shift to drive?

I have a 1990 e350 van and all of a sudden if just stopped shifting up into drive, it shifts the first gears but will not go ahead and go to drive, does anyone know what I could look for to repair this problem, if its take to a transmission shop then I will junk the thing, I don't want to put a lot of money into a old truck
