1989 suzuki 250 quad 4wd?

when pressing the starter button the starter turns but doesnt turn the engine. when the rope is pulled it does turn the engine over either. kinda feels like it has no compression. any ideas. it was running. turned it off and no will not crank the engine over....thanks in advance for the help
