...loses charge. Battery good? the gauge reads good battery reading. New alternator installed. Battery new. Car starts but when I remove the positive cable from battery the car turns off. Have gone through 2 Alternators and I guess that is not the problem. could the problem be the voltage regulator. I don't know if this car has one or where.
 
Your battery and your alternator have a reciprocal agreement. As long as the battery provides power to the field coils, the alternator will charge the battery. When you disconnect the battery you nullify that agreement and the alternator quits working. And when you disconnect the battery you are probably blowing out the rectifiers in the alternator.

STOP DOING THAT!
