i am looking into purchasing a 1989 MAZDA RX7 GXL but it has 165,000 original miles on it. It is going for $2495, is in rather amazing condition. But here is where I worry.

What are known problems of the 1989 MAZDA RX7 GXL?
What are problems that could come out of the blue for an RX-7 of that year and model with that many miles on it?
The owner took good care of the vehicle and never beat it up while driving it, but still at 165000 miles on the engine what should i expect?
Should I expect it to continue running for years yet (I do not do a LOT of traveling, currently the only guarantee on driving is 4 miles to and from college 5 days a week. Other travels are spontaneous with my friends, lol. But furthest I would go is Miami (from Orlando) and that would only be on weekends of course).
Old Man Dirt: thanks for the response! im good at taking care of cars and i always wanted an older rx7. as far as friends, they can take another car (lol!). im just curious as to whether or not this thing might crap out on me even though it was taken real good care of. 165000 is a lot of mileage :P

A 1989 RX7 would not be my choice for a casual driver. There are several reasons for this. The first one is that it is almost a classic. This means the parts are getting scarce. There never were many parts at local parts shops to begin with and dealer support on older cars like this is almost non existent. The engine is unique to Mazda and in specific the RX series.
Another reason is that the RX series car requires careful attention. By nature it looses oil and therefore needs the oil level checked daily (or at least every fill up). It is unforgiving on how it is started too. A lot of rotary engines fail due to inattention of the driver on start up.
The last reason that comes to mind is seating, I notice you said friends, well seating in a RX7 is for practical purposes limited to two, even in the +2 set up.
Now don't take me wrong, I love the RX7. I am in the process of fixing one up for fun driving. With proper attention the engine can last a long time.
But for someone who needs a car just to hop in and take off with out attention to detail, it is just not the one!
