Just pull motor out and bring to machine shop and have it rebuilt. Yes the rods can be taken off pistons, but it's not worth it because you should replace rods and pistons as a set and if you do that you might as well get the engine rebuilt, or maby get a junk yard motor.

Can the pistons be taken off the rods and put back on without taking them to a machine shop? I need to change the pistons and am trying to do it myself.
The reason for changing pistons is due to the motor is out of a lx escort and has dish top pistons and I need the gt dome top pistons.

No, you need to replace the whole deal as a set. Also note that you need to have the cylinders honed before putting in pistons and rings. New rings will not work properly in old cylinders.
You can try and skimp out on this but you'll only end up needing a complete rebuild after severely scratching your cylinder walls.
Your connecting rods will probably not fit the "new" set of pistons anyway. There are gap tolerances there and they are not to be overlooked.
Let a machine shop do it right for you.
