1989 Dodge Caravan gas mileage?

I have a 1989 Dodge Caravan with the 2.5L engine and 5 speed manual transmission. The car was originally an automatic but I bought a parts car and converted mine from auto to manual tranny and swapped out the engine as well. I used to get 22MPG with the automatic and now I am getting about 26MPG on the highway. I feel I should be able to break 28 MPG and am wondering if the transmission final ratio may be the problem here. I have been told they used a higher gear ratio in the Caravan than in the sedan and station wagon. Any idea if changing out the drive gears would result in any better MPG - it is a pretty boxy vehicle, so not sure I would gain anything. Opinons please?
