1988 toyota pickup running rough?

i have a 88 toyota truck 22re fuel injection ok so it seems like its idleing fine but their is a bad gas smell i just had all the valves adjusted and it made it a little better here is the problem it idles ok except the smell but as soon as i push the gas pedal it tries to die but it i feather the pedal it runs fine i also nothice i had gas leaking out of my charcoal canister not sure what that means i checked my catalitic converter for a clogg its good but i also tinkered with a screw thats on the top right side of the intake i think its the gas air mixture screw not to sure but ever since i messed with it the truck has went down hill i changed the plugs wires etc checked timing but anyway if you have any suggestions please let know thank you
