1987 Intruder for first bike

I am looking to move into motorcycles, been riding a Helix for a while. I have found a 1987 Suzuki Intruder 1400? or 1500 for $2000, 39,000 miles. It is being sold by a dealer, it is a trade-in, they state in good condition. I like the thin chopper like looks of the bike. Although I don't need this much power, the bike seems small, and fits the profile I am looking for, plus it has a windshield, bags and other add ons that I like. I have a few questions if anyone can help.

1. Is this a good bike to move up to?

2. I have done some research, and know what to check for on a used bike, but are there any problems specific to the 1987 Intruder that I should check for?

3. Is 39,000 miles a lot of miles for this bike?

Thanks for your help.

I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but I'm thinking you could get something newer with fewer miles for around the same price. I got my '95 Intruder 800 for $2300 with 18K miles.

You mentioned that you don't need the power of a 1400 or 1500. Maybe check into a newer 800?

Where is it located? I'd buy it as a good project bike myself. 39K miles for that year sounds very low.

I wouldnt say that your getting an INCREDIBLE deal on it, but it seems fair.

The Intruder 1400 (they didnl;t make a 1500 back then) is a great bike, virtually problem free. And that is not a lot of miles either, as the motor is good for 80-100K.

However, there are a couple things to think about. First, it is a 20 year old bike, and the NADA average value is a touch over half what they are asking. If the bike is indeed in great shape, and it had the accessories you want, it might be worth it. If it were in darn near perfect shape I'd pay $2000 for it, but if there was a single scratch or the tires were at all worn I'd talk them down. Intruders have been sold in very large numbers for over 20 years now, so if you decide you want one they are not hard to find used.
Secondly, the older Intruder 1400s had only a 4-speed transmission, which is why the book value is so low. Some folks don't mind the 4-speed trans, but some hated it. If you have never riden a 4-speed bike, take the Intruder for a test drive before you buy.

Whatever Thriller Man. :)
