1987-88 Toyota Corolla FX16 GTS?

This car, which has recently had the clutch and one cv joint changed has just died. It ran fine to my destination and when I returned to the car to start it, it would not start. There is no power to anything at all. A friend came over to give me a boost but it would not even turn over when attached to friends battery. Am uncertain as to the systems I should have checked (cheapest to most expensive, perhaps) and even what I should have checked. I always get overcharged for car repair so the last time I had a problem on a different car, I asked here and the answers I got contained the solution that cost me only the purchase of a part in the part store.
