Possible both spark plug and crap in the carb.
Start with a new plug.
Now for the 'no smoking' section. Open the bottom carb plug and let it flow for about three seconds with the gas petcock open and catching all of the flow in a clean container for observation.
If crap is observed in the fuel you MAY have cleared it out, maybe not.
Install a fuel filter and change that about every 4-5K.

If little maintenance has been done over the years or the bike sat idle for a long period, a through 'go-thru' is advisable.

1986 suzuki LS650 runs rough at higher idle. Sputters and won't get above 20mph (no RPM info available) Ran very smoothly until rider stalled it at a stop light. It then began the condition described above. Any ideas? I was thinking sediment in the carb or possibly bad spark plug (the engine is a 650cc single) Thanks in advance!
