Driving my brother's truck, which sat for at least a year without being serviced. Once he let me start driving it, my dad and I had to take it in to a mechanic to get it running. They said that the carburetor was coming off, and they went and tightened it up. That was in February, and it's been running okay (mileage isn't great). Then, about 2 weeks ago, it started making this loud roar, and I took it back and was told that the heat riser on the exhaust manifold came off. They told me that the manifold had to be replaced (also told me that it'd take 4 hours to replace and around $500 for parts and labor... I've had five different people tell me that's ridiculous). So it's been noisy, but running okay.
Then a few days ago, it started stalling while idling. Normally when I start it up, I have to idle for a few minutes to warm up. But if I let it idle, it'll get bumpy and then stall out. I don't have a whole lot of money, so I'm trying to do what I can for as little as I can. I know the carburetor has to be replaced, but when I checked, it seemed like it was on pretty solid, didn't wiggle. I'm just trying to get some advice and pointers.
It's a 1986 Ford F-150 4X2 4.9L 6 cylinder engine with an automatic transmission. I don't exactly know what carburetor models are compatible with it (I don't know if I can find a carburetor from a later make that might work, or what... ). I'd appreciate any help I can get.
