In my '88 Bronco (5.0L), this was caused by the ICM, or Ignition Control Module. Apparently, this was a pretty common problem, because when I asked at a place, the guy knew right away what I was talking about and even claimed to keep extras in his truck. Regardless, it's located on the distributor, and I think it's a relatively easy fix, especially if you've already gotten this far on your own.
But yeah, it had something to do with the heat, and especially any moisture and that causing it not to connect/work properly.
