Hi all,
I have an 86 camaro that I just drove across the country in. After about 500 miles, I filled the tank with Plus gas (was in Nebraska so it was cheaper) which has 10% ethanol. Immediately after filling it, when I started the car it started making a 'muffler' noise, or rather the noise the car makes without a muffler, coming from the engine bay right in front of the drivers seat.
I looked at the engine and I saw a piece beneath the drivers side of the engine that looked red-hot. The oil was very high. The car didn't seem to have lost any power and it actually appears to be getting better gas mileage. I drove the last 600 miles of my trip with the car this way because I didn't have anywhere else to go and no money.
The engine seems to 'pulsate' or vibrate when going over 3-4000 RPM. Luckily I was able to drive at about 2k rpm the whole way.
Anyone know what could have caused this? Was it the gas? Where do I look to see what exactly happened to the cat converter? I'm guessing there's a hole somewhere along the exhaust line and that's why it's so loud? Can I continue driving like this until I have the money to fix it or is there an easy fix?
I really don't have the money for an expensive fix, and I probably won't until I find work here.
