my 1985 jeep cherokee is always overheating. we took it to a mechanic (im not sure he was the brightest or most knowledgeable) but he claims he thought it might be a blown head. he checked the oil dip stick, no milky or white residue. he then checked if there was oil in the radiator, that was also a no. then i asked if he did a compression check he says he might have, and he thinks it came back ok... so im really confused? could it be a blown head? or something else. it just always overheats! what should i look at next? the fans?

whats the size of engine? Does it smoke white from the tail pipe? If you remove the radiator cap and turn on the Jeep do you have compression ( a lot of pressure and water gushing out of the radiator when you press on the gas) coming out of the radiator? If your answer is yes to any of these questions than yes you could have a blown head gasket... p.s. if your mechanic does not seem so bright find a better one -- they are like doctors--- always get a second opinion.

H2O pump
thermostat
radiator and cap

Check all of those. I would guess it needs a new radiator...common issue

Do not go back to that mechanic....He thinks he did a compression test....how do you not know.....that is a bit of work to not remember
