1985 Cadillac, possible relay problem?

I recently aquired a 1985 Coupe Deville with 96K mi. There is an intermittent clicking sound (relay maybe?) coming from the dash area. When the sound is there the car runs rough or dies and check engine light comes on.The diagnostic codes I am getting are; E23, Solenoid open, E30, Idle speed cntrl circuit, E44, O2 sensor lean, E47 (not listed) E53, Distributor signal interrupt.
Any thoughts on which of these might be causing that sound behind the dash and cause the car to run rough or stall when the condition exsist...

with several codes already it is hard to pinpoint the issue you are reporting; you will need to resolve each code first and then if the car still has this problem you can research it further; however, simply from what you have stated so far my guess is the emission system is totally shot, the sound you are hearing is most likely the engine forming vapor lock as it can't "spit out" all the unneeded fumes that are clogging this car up.

Your car's computer would control the solenoid. So I would see what the Chiltons and Motors auto repair manuals at your local public library (or a GM shop manual at http://www.helminc.com ) has information on about the computer and how it controls the solenoid that you hear clicking. You also need to find and identify that solenoid's function.
Of course the clicking sound could result from some totally unrelated component that is affected when the engine stalls. But the Idle speed related error codes (E23, E30) most likely are where to begin troubleshooting tests. I would see how the computer controls the idle speed through the idle speed solenoid if your car has those components.
