1984 Ford Escort GL 1.6L 2BBL Carbureted: No Start?

I recently acquired a Ford Escort for free that went through the apparently typical under-hood electrical fire. The previous owner appears to have replaced all the wiring correctly, however I will never know without doing it all over again, as he used one color wire for everything. It doesn't start, but turns over. It is not getting spark at the plugs. Is there anything obvious to check? I'd rather not start replacing parts that may not be bad. I live in bush Alaska so testing tools, diagnostic computers, etc...yeah right. I'd be lucky to round up a multi-meter. Assuming the wiring has been replaced correctly, where should I start? Also, does this vehicle have an inertia fuel-cutoff switch, and where is it located?
Pushing it into a lake will be my next resort...I don't like Fords at all, but the price was right...haha
