1983 Toyota Tercel- What does white smoke exhaust mean? Solution?

I just bought my first car, a 1983 Toyota Tercel. It leaks some white smoke, and I've googled a little bit, from what I hear it sounds like either a blown headgasket, or a cracked cylinder head or engine block.

If this isn't the case, what would my problem be?

If what I found might be the cause, how can I confirm it? Is there some way to test if the headgasket needs to be replaced?
