1983 Kawasaki GPZ 750, how do you start and store it properly? i don't get the choke

and fuel settings.? There are three fuel settings, and a choke. It starts fine i just figure if these things are there they must serve some purpose and i'm worried that if i am in fact doing this incorrectly i may be messing something up.
 
If the choke control is on the handlebars, move it to the "ON" position for a cold start. In warm weather, you don't need to choke again until the engine is completely cooled off. If the choke control is on the carburetors, pull out the knob to engage the choke. In either case, leave the choke on until the engine will run smoothly.

As for the fuel valve, or petcock, you will have "ON", "OFF", and "RES". ON and OFF are self explaining. Turn the fuel off when the bike is parked to keep from flooding the carbs. There will be an arrow on the valve to show you which way to turn it.

RES is for reserve fuel. If you run out of gas with the valve set to ON, turn the valve to RES, and there will be some extra gas left to get to a gas station. If you ride with the valve always set to RES and run out of gas, you will be pushing the bike home. The bike is made this way in case the gas gauge is not so accurate.
 
three fuel setting = on, reserve and off

turn choke on when cold start in the morning or bike been park over an hour. once bike rev up turn choke off slowly

for long term storage - place fuel stabilizer in the tank and top the tank off with super unleaded and run bike for a 5 minutes then turn fuel setting to off. also, get yourself a nice battery tender so battery is charged when needed.
 
There is no problem starting it with or without the choke in the 'correct' position. The fuel valve or petcock on the bottom of the tank should point towards the fuel line that's connected to it when started. Make sure you turn it back after the engine is off.
 
if You have three settings,do you have C.V.carbs?,like some Yamaha's,ones with flat domes on top?,if you do,then I'm guessing one of your fuel settings is marked .P.R.I,meaning prime.that basically dumps neat petrol into the carbs as a starting aid.the choke works as a enriching,when the engine is cold,if you open the choke fully,then more air than petrol,passes into the carbs,which in turn,makes the mixture richer,which in turn,makes it easier to start from cold.obviously,when the engine is warm,leave the choke off,or alone,you won't need it,
