sounds like old tired tranny, could possibly be a dirty filter, check what the fluid looks like. this is not going to affect smog, and in 82 there was almost none to begin with so run it through and see what it says. The tranny may be a bit old and could have sat for a while, it may not hurt to put some chevron super unleaded and drive it nece and easy. that will help clear the engine, and if the oil is dirty, change it, the test is sensitive enough to detect dirty oil.
