1980 Kawasaki LTD 440 died on me. Why?

There I was cruising along at a gentle 50-55mph when there was a power dip. I though it might be the fuel, so I switched it to reserve. When that didn't do anything I was forced to pull over and have someone come and pick me up.

I noticed that the oil light was on and the case seemed hotter than it should be. I checked the oil level and it's full... or at least, that's what I think.

You're supposed to check the level while the bike is "level" right? Not on the stand? So, any ideas? I'm want to try changing the oil, but I don't know the capacity. I can't really afford to take it in, as I only have about 25 bucks to my name.
