i have a 1979 honda xl125s (off road use). i want to get it road legal for uk roads.. i need to know if this bike has "European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval". or will i have to get it MSVA ?
can dvla tell me if that model has European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval?

The XL125 S 185S and 225 were all whole vehicle type approval.
However you will have to submit for a v5C first to see if your bike was previously reg in the UK.
If it was an import you will need the import docs and it's cert of conformity.
Without that or the duty paid you will have to submit for an SVA and be prepared to pay duty.
Keep all receipts and off set these against duty paid..
UNFORTUNATELY
if you do not have a VIN number on the bike or an engine number you are not going to get the bike reg in the uk.
it is also highly likely the bike was originally stolen and disguised as a non road legal version.
If so be prepared to lose it to the insurance company, be prepared to barter with them if the theft was over 5 years ago on total loss basis.

EDIT contrary to popular belief as it is a dual purpose bike you do not need indicators
also
If you go for a day time MOT you do not need lights either

If it was sold in UK, they it will have a vin number. You will need to obtain a V5 logbook for it, which will mean it will need to be assigned a reg number. You will probably get an aged related plate or a Q plate. Then you need to put on:
working horn
Front headlight with pilot, main and high beam
tail and stop light.
It must have working brake switches front and back
It will need a chain guard
It will need to be quite enough to pass the mot- which is up the the mot'er, if he thinks its too loud of not ( as its pre 1983- unless DVLA asign it as first regfistered after 1983)

You dont need inticators on it if its given an age related plate

Another thing to concider is that the alternator may not be capable of runing the engine and lighting too.
