It would be a fine bike to learn on. With an old 2-stroke, you need to be sure the crank seals are in good shape, especially on the primary side. leaky seals interfere with crankcase compression, giving erratic running. In addition, gearbox oil can be drawn into the crank case, resulting in too much oil in the fuel/ air charge. If the gearbox runs dry, you have yet another problem.
