Hey, my dad just gave me a 1974 Yamaha RD250 motorcycle. I don't have a key for it so I'm gonna' try to hot wire it. I was wondering how I should go about hot wiring it, and if I need a battery to get it started.
I also need to know what things I need to do to get it running good, like what kind of fuses I need, what kind of filter, what type of oil (and where to put the oil).
I'm only 15 so I won't be able to ride it on the road for a while yet, but I would like to get it running.
I don't know anything about motorcycles, so any information is helpful.

that bike is going to be hard to get parts for,
yes you need a battery
its a 2 stroke engine, make sure the injection pump is working, if its not you're going to have the mix the 2 stroke oil with the gas in the gas tank
before you even think about wiring, take a compression test, make sure the reed valves are ok, not stuck and clean the carbs
the engine takes a normal engine oil that only lubes the transmission and clutch, use a Shell Rotalla 15W40, it doesn't have an oil filter
electrical, throw a battery in it then check for spark, also that bike uses a generator instead of a stator, and it uses ign points and condenser, make sure its timed at the left cyl at TDC.

I would LOVE to have that bike, its super fast when its running good
