I need to know, and this is probably stupid, but my car has been sitting for around 20 years, and the guy i bought it from said all it needed a new carb and manifold. Problem is, i dont know what is missing in the engine to know what i really need to get it running. Does anyone think i need something else in the engine area besides a carb and manifold, or would it just be cheaper to buy a new engine? The car is a project car by the way, but it is worth restoring.

how are we to know if it needs anything except for what you told us a carb and intake , ok start there go out and buy an intake and carb if it dont start then take it to a mechanic

Open the hood and see if the manifold is in place.
It should be plain enough to spot, as in you can see the lifters and push rods of the engine.
As for where to get one. Well you need to find out the engine size, then either go to a site like Summit Racing or Speedway Motors (there are others PAW for example). They should have something that will work.
You might find one in a salvage yard or listed in Hemmings Motor News.
It will not be cheaper to just replace the engine. There is just not a whole lot of parts to loose on that old buggy. There are lots of books on it out there. So with some work it should be able to be on the road once more in a few weeks.
Now you might need a new engine. But clean out the gas tank, put in new plugs and points. With a little care on start up it might just fire right up and run for another 50000 miles.
