usually I just skip second gear, its a 3 speed transmission. today I was giving someone a ride on the back and it started misfiring and farting for about 20 seconds.. I had to keep slacking off the throttle for it to keep running then it just died.. I saw a little smoke coming from the flywheel area where the points are.. any ideas if that is the problem? does that sound like what happens when they go? I know more about electronic ignition.. this old stuff confuses me lol

Sorry Rebbecca but I think you might want to retire your little cub. It's 42 years old, only 65cc, and you're riding two up. The gearbox is bad. There is a lot more than one single gear doing work inside at any time. And it sounds like something smoked inside the generator. Electronic ignition came long after this this putter. You can remember the fun you had. We all were there.

The real name for a points ignition is KETTERING IGNITION and It works backwards from the way you think the points don't pass the current to the points, points fire when the current is interrupted, points open, For advice look for some small auto garage and ask the oldest geezer there..
