They were better than average, but the average sucked.
If you can find a good cleasn body try replacing the entire engine trans withe a 5L late motor for better mileage and increased performance.
Todays cars are much better than the olders in so many ways but the styling was significant.

If you are concerned about fuel mileage then this car probably isn't for you. Figure about 17-19 MPG for an inline six model with a three speed manual. A little less with the automatic and about 15-19 MPG for the 2bbl 289 V8 with a 4 speed manual, The Hi-Po 289 or 4 bbl 289 will get a little worse mileage.

People who have these cars generally don't care much about fuel mileage since most of then just drive their classic Mustang on the weekends. I really wouldn't recommend one as a daily driver. They are mechanically simple and usually cheap and easy to repair, but a 40+ year old car is going to some issues just because of age. Most of the time the problems aren't a big deal and are easy to fix, but you will have more of them than you would with a more modern car.

Not the V8's but the six cylinder model with a fresh engine can get up to 27 mpg on the freeway if driven at a constant 60 mph, but it will drop to 17 around town..
